Arrested for fake armed robbery story

A 26-year-old man who recently opened a case of armed robbery was arrested for perjury on March 30.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the man reported that he was robbed at gunpoint by two unknown SAPS members who were in full uniform.

“He said this happened after he withdrew money at a shopping centre on Tom Jones Street,” said Sekele.

He said he was forced into their bakkie, and they drove with him to Vosloorus Hostel.

Thereafter, they drove with him to Kingsway and left him there.

“With further investigation, it was established that the crime was fabricated and the man never withdrew any money,” added Sekele.

The man appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on March 31.
