Reinvent your cake

We told you to look out for our next edition about the Benoni City Times Mother’s Day Cake Bake Competition judge, Loraine Krugel, and here it is.

Krugel has been the proud owner of the Cafe Mirosta coffee shop in Northmead Square for 19 years, so her knowledge about cake is extensive.

“I have dealt with good suppliers, bad suppliers, good cakes and bad cakes,” Krugel said.

The Rynfield resident will be judging the cakes baked for the 10th Mother’s Day Cake Bake Competition happening on May 4 at Cherry Lane Gourmet Café on 12 14th Avenue and Fifth Street, Northmead.

Since a young age Krugel was exposed to the food industry because her parents owned a restaurant, and as she grew older, she too became involved in the food industry.

“I even bake cakes for this coffee shop,” Krugel said.

“I make mean carrot, cheese and apple cakes.”

But original cakes is not something that tickles Krugel’s taste buds, she prefers ‘reinvented cakes’.

“If you are making a milk tart, then reinvent the recipe,” she said.

Apart from an original recipe that is not reinvented, Krugel is also not a fan of savoury desserts, instead, she has a love for sweet desserts.

“I also love a chocolate cake that is moist and unique… reinvented,” she concluded.

The decade cake competition celebratory party will be bigger and better with entertainer, HunTer, who will perform and be the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the day.

The categories for 2017 include: professional, fun, tarts (sweet and savoury), cupcakes and tartlets and raw cakes.

Look out for the upcoming City Times editions for profiles about our last two judges, Dejané Poil and Charmelle Retief.
