Local band makes waves in music industry

The UnSynd band was formed at the Music Academy of Gauteng in Putfontein, and now the group aims to make waves in the music industry.

The band, which consists of South African vocalists, songwriters and record producers based in Johannesburg, has been working to produce and perform music that is magical and memorable.

The members of the group are Thandile ‘Malo’ Njombela, Siyabonga ‘Jazzman’ Mthombeni, Max ‘Brainchild’ Maake and Zoliswa ‘Zoli’ King.

Straight outta Benoni

Although the group is based in Johannesburg, they are no strangers to Benoni.

Vocalist and songwriter of UnSynd, Njombela, lives in Benoni CBD and Mthombeni lives in Crystal Park.

King grew up in Wattville and attended school at Benoni Junior, Benoni West and St Francis College.

Their new single Circles debuted on Good Hope FM on January 26 and Smile FM on February 5.

But that is not all.

UnSynd will be releasing their extended play (EP) in April and will tour thereafter.

The band wants to write and produce with and for other artists and brands.

They will be hosting their first ‘UnSynd Sessions’ on April 1 – an event that aims to support, showcase and encourage local artists, by providing a platform to perform and collaborate.

The venue of this event will be kept a secret, but artists or followers who are keen on attending can RSVP to unsynd@gmail.com and also state if they are an artist or a follower.

The sessions are about empowering other unsigned artists by providing a platform to perform and giving listeners the best live entertainment.

Band’s thoughts on music

“I wanted to get a feel of each fundamental person in what type of music they listen to and not have one specific outcome of music,” Mthombeni said.

Njombela joined the band because of vision.

“Growth; I would love to see us become who we were destined to be and influence others as we go,” Njombela said.

While King loves music and wanted to sing with others.

“I just want us to grow together as musicians and as people,” King added.

“I want to be able to develop new sounds and contribute to the music industry.”

Maake said that he had never been one to follow trends and, as a result, he was drawn to the band’s vision of music.

“Music these days has the ability and tendency of being one-dimensional, and through the group I hope to help diversify what is put out on the market,” he said.

UnSynd’s singles Ziright and Circles are available for free download on Audiomack and their music can be heard on their Sound Cloud page, @unsynd. The EP will be available on streaming services such as Spotify, iTunes and Google Play.
