UPDATE: Northmead Square robbery leaves onlooker ‘dumbstruck’

A woman described today’s robbery at Northmead Square as an “out-of-body” experience.

JJ Jewellers was targeted by at least four men this morning.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster SAPS spokesperson, said four men entered the store at around 11.40am.

Sekele said the owner and two co-workers were at the business when the men entered and started smashing a counter containing jewellery.

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said she was “dumbstuck” when she saw the crime being committed metres from her.

“It felt like an out-of-body experience,” she said.

The onlooker saw one man with a hammer smashing the cabinet, while three others grabbed valuables.

“It was so bloody organised: one smashed and the others grabbed – and they took lots; they had arms full.”

She said it was over within seconds.

Sekele said the robbers fled in a car.

No serious injuries were reported.

A case of business robbery has been opened and no arrests have been made.

Northmead Square management said they would provide comment on the matter by the end of tomorrow (March 29).
