No injuries in Harpur Avenue fire

No one was injured during a blaze in a flat in Harpur Avenue, Western Extension on March 16.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) subdued the fire at Highveld flats shortly after receiving the report, at around 9.32am.

“On arrival, it was found that an apartment was on fire and the first arriving officer used the reel hose to attack and contain the blaze,” said William Ntladi, DEMS spokesperson.

“On-scene investigations showed that the fire might have started in one of the upstairs bedrooms and burned past the ceiling, spreading through to the roof trusses.

“Offensive action was then initiated, whereby firefighters entered the building with their primary full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

“The fire was extinguished without further damage to the structure.

“Ventilation was initiated because of dense smoke, which filled the apartment.

“All other hot spots were also cooled off to prevent re-ignition.”

Ntladi said no casualties were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Some neighbouring flats sustained water and smoke damage, though this was not caused directly by the fire.

The residents of the flat did not want to comment.
