Shopper surprised during Rebel armed robbery

A shopper in a fruit and vegetable store was surprised when the place was robbed in broad daylight yesterday (March 9).

A case of business robbery was opened at the Benoni Police Station after Rebel Fruit and Veg, on Main Reef Road, was robbed at around 1pm.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said it’s alleged that about six men entered the store.

“One of the armed robbers instructed everyone not to make a noise and to keep still,” said Sekele.

“The other robbers went to different tills and demanded money from the cashiers.”

Sekele added that the criminals fled the scene, but it is unclear what car they were driving.

According to a shopper, who would like to remain anonymous, he was about to pay at the till when one of the robbers passed behind him.

“The man showed me a gun; he said I must keep quiet and also told other shoppers not to move,” he said.

“The robbers then told cashiers to open the tills; they took the money, put it in bags and left.”

The shopper said he was surprised that the robbery took place at that time of the day.

Sekele said an undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the store, but nothing was taken from the customers.

No injuries were reported and no arrests were made.

Rebel Fruit and Veg was contacted for comment, but did not respond by the time of publishing.
