Calling Benoni cake bakers

It’s time to get your baking ingredients out because we are baking our way into a new decade at this year’s Benoni City Times Mother’s Day Cake Bake competition on May 4.

Maybe that was a mouthful to say, but we are also excited to introduce our new category in this year’s round, called “raw cake” – which is a mouthful to eat.

“The cake bake competition started 10 years ago as a community project,” said the founder of the project and Benoni City Times sales manager, Heila Brophy.

“The project has been a success throughout the years and gives community members an opportunity to showcase their talents – and we have amazing bakers in Benoni.”

This year, the party will be bigger and better with entertainer HunTer, who will perform and be the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the day at Cherrylane Gourmet Café.

The categories for 2017 include: professional, fun, tarts (sweet and savoury), cupcakes and tartlets and raw cakes.

So what is raw cake?

It’s a gluten-free, sugarcane-free, egg-free and lactose-free cake which contains fruit, nuts, fruit paste, seeds, coconut oil/milk/cream and dates.

The confirmed judges are Berry Legg, Xanthe Weissnar, Paul Smith, Loraine Krugel, Stelios Coutsides, Wendy Bernhardt, Moira Wall and Shawn Govender.

More judges will be announced at a later stage.

Bakers need to arrive on May 4 with their cakes by 7am, at Cherrylane.
