Crash injures 15, one critically

At least 19 people were involved in the accident which happened on Great North Road on the afternoon of March 6.

The five-vehicle accident, which included a police Quantum, happened at around 4pm on the corner of Great North Road and Webb Street.

Annine Dormehl, ER24 spokesperson, said of those involved 15 people were transported to hospital.

A female victim was airlifted in a Netcare 911 helicopter in a critical condition.

The remaining patients sustained minor to moderate injuries.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said 15 police officers were in the police vehicle, of whom 13 were hospitalised.

“Members were en route to give assistance as a police truck, with prisoners en route to Modderbee Prison, broke down,” said Sekele.

A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened.
