Snake Road robber sentenced to 15 years

A man was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in the Benoni Regional Court on February 28.

Magistrate Mitzi Schutte sentenced Sipho Gideon Mpama (27) after he was found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

According to Benoni SAPS spokesperson Const Zunickha Essakjee, on November 9, robbery victims were hitch-hiking on Snake Road, when Mpama, together with other unknown suspects, approached them.

“One of the suspects took out a knife and threatened to stab the victims, robbing them of their money and cellphones,” said Essakjee.

“A motorist noticed what was happening and he stopped.

“He gave chase, but the suspects managed to get away.”

At about 6pm on the day of the robbery, police went to the area where the crime took place.

They spotted the three suspects and managed to arrest one of them, while the other two evaded arrest.

The sentence will be served at Modderbee Prison.
