Pools attract complaints

Noise levels and litter at the two public swimming pools in Benoni are causing concern among residents.

“Ever since Benoni Central Swimming Pool re-opened, the noise has been almost unbearable,” said a resident who lives in close proximity to the pool.

“Taxis park outside the pool with their music playing at top volume with the bass turned up to the max.

“Even with our doors and windows closed, the noise level is so bad that items in our house actually rattle.

The resident, who did not want to be named, also said that to her knowledge, the pool is used as a daily drug-dealing site; however, no case has been reported from her side to the police.

However, Benoni police spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said no case can be investigated until it is opened.

“Therefore we are asking the complainant or the community to come forward and report the matter affecting them,” Sekele said.

However, a case that was reported several times to the police is that of the litter and noise at the recently closed Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool.

“Most Saturday afternoons around 5.30pm the drinking party moves out into the parking area; it’s absolute chaos,” said an anonymous resident.

“The taxis blast the radios so that the windows vibrate. There are bottles being smashed, loud whistling and singing and the visitors urinate everywhere – against the walls, on the paving and so on.”

Sekele said that Benoni SAPS is aware of the matter and police are attending to it.

“We are doing our best to police the area continuously, and where necessary fines will be issued,” Sekele added.

“The issue regarding the taxis should be taken up with the municipality since the place belongs to them, and they are the ones issuing by-laws.”
