Community criticised for being apathetic towards crime

The community has been criticised for showing little interest in finding solutions to crime, despite continually complaining about it.

Speaking at a Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting at Rynfield Primary School on February 9, executive chairperson of the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster CPF, Reza Patel, said many people complain about crime, but very few do anything about it.

He was referring to another poor turnout of community members at the public meeting, which includes representatives from senior officers of the Benoni Police Station.

It was also noted that the majority of attendees were CPF members.

“It is very disappointing that even though meetings are advertised very well, the only people that ever come to meetings are the ones who are already involved and one or two members of the community who would like to show an interest,” said Patel.

“I think what is important is that we understand that the general public is apathetic towards crime, but they are the first ones to complain when there is a surge in crime.

“And who do they pick on? The police service!

“In the meantime, they did not come to the meeting to raise concerns.

“They did not come to the meetings en masse to show support.”

Patel urged the community to get involved in the fight against crime, such as joining the local CPF in any capacity possible.

“Don’t just come with complaints; come with a constructive approach,” Patel urged.
