Cyclist hurt in hit-and-run

Cyclist Ken Poole (74) was knocked off his bicycle on the R25 as he was approaching Snake Road on Saturday.

The incident happened at around 5.30am.

“I was training for the Iron Man South Africa race which is taking place in April in Port Elizabeth,” Poole said.

According to Poole, who lives in Edenglen, he was driving in the yellow lane when a vehicle knocked him from behind.

“I underwent surgery at Netcare Linksfield Hospital, where pins were placed in my arm,” Poole said.

“My calf was also grazed so badly that I may need to have skin grafts.”

Poole said the driver of the vehicle hit him and drove off, but he was not the only one.

“After the driver knocked me, I managed to pull myself and my bicycle to the side of the road to just lie there,” Poole said.

“A while later, three cyclists who found me, stopped to assist me.

“They told me that two other cyclists were also knocked a few minutes before I was.”

Poole was discharged from hospital on Monday morning and said that he would stop at a police station near Bronkhorstspruit to report the incident.

The incident has left Poole uncertain about whether or not he will be able to compete in the race in April.

“The injuries are too serious and it is too early to say whether or not I will be okay to race,” he added.
