Hijackings concern police

The Daveyton SAPS is concerned about the escalating number of car hijackings in the area.

On February 7, a man was hijacked in his driveway in Daveyton.

According to police spokesperson Capt Mesh Makole, the complainant alleges that he parked his car inside the garage.

“Before he could get out of the vehicle, he was approached by two males and one was armed,” said Makole.

“One of the men pointed a firearm at the victim and instructed him to get onto the backseat of the car.”

“The hijackers drove with the man to an unknown location, where they dropped him off,” added Makole.

The two men drove away with the VW Golf Six, which was later discovered at the Tembisa Taxi Rank.

No arrests were made.

Makole called on the community to heed the following tips:

• Motorists must be more aware of their environment and be more vigilant when driving.

• Do not use cellphones while driving or waiting at traffic lights.

• Do not park vehicles on the pavements, especially at night.

• Keep all windows and doors locked and don’t leave any belongings lying around in the vehicle.

• Vehicle owners should consider installing tracking devices in their vehicles, to make them easy to trace when stolen.

Three hot spots in the area are: Dungeni Street, Magwaza Street and Mayekiso Street.

Makole said no specific types of vehicles are being targeted.
