Benoni High bids farewell to Dearham

Lolly Dearham (formerly de Wet), who was a life science educator at Benoni High School, died on February 1 and will be missed by all at the school.

“Lolly was like some chocolates – a hard exterior with a soft interior,” said principal of Benoni High School, Jake Ceronio.

Dearham (53) began teaching at Benoni High School in 2006 and was known for her love of coaching hockey.

“When I think about Lolly, I think hockey,” Ceronio said.

“I remember her voice – 60 minutes of constant motivation, urging and egging on, shaking her head at the referee’s decisions.”

According to Ceronio, after tough hockey practices, she would, out of her own pocket, buy the hockey girls cake and cold drinks to thank them.

“Her life will be remembered by many people for the different things she meant to them,” Ceronio added.

“She is ingrained in the very fabric of Benoni High School.”

Ceronio added that Dearham was a passionate teacher and a loyal friend to the staff of Benoni High School.

“To the learners in her care, she gave them the very best in her class and on the fields, and they developed a great respect for Lolly,” he said.

A representative of Benoni High School said that Dearham was always willing to help others up until her last days, when she tried to arrange a place for a child at Benoni High School.

“I believe there is a message from God through Lolly: one must never accept defeat,” the representative said.
