Man hijacked and murdered

A case of hijacking and murder has been opened at the Benoni Police Station after a taxi driver was found dead on Main Reef Road.

The man, who is believed to be in his late 20s, was found in open veld next to the Rynsoord Cemetery on February 8, at around 9pm.

According to Ekurhuleni SAPS Central Cluster spokesperson Capt Ramothakhi Maqabe, it is alleged that the owner of the taxi received a call from a tracking company asking him about his vehicle.

“He then called his driver and someone unknown to him answered the phone and demanded money to release the Quantum taxi,” said Maqabe.

“The taxi owner reported the vehicle missing and a case of hijacking was opened.”

Maqabe added that around 10pm on the same day, the body of an unknown person was found with gunshot wounds in open veld next to the Rynsoord Cemetery.

The unknown man was identified as the man who was driving the taxi.
