Police officer shot during robbery

A case of business robbery has been opened at the Crystal Park SAPS after a drop safe was bombed at around 2.30am today (February 7).

The incident occurred at Total Garage on Kingsway Road.

According to Capt Ramothakhi Maqabe, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson, it is alleged that six men driving in a silver Mercedes-Benz arrived at the garage and hooted for assistance.

“One of the alleged robbers came out of the vehicle carrying a firearm, went inside the store and ordered the teller to open the door,” said Maqabe.

“Once inside, the man went to the office where the drop safe is situated.”

Maqabe said the man then blew up the drop safe.

“While the robbery was taking place, a police vehicle passed by the filling station and one of the alleged suspects who was waiting outside started shooting at the police vehicle,” said Maqabe.

“An officer was shot in the leg.”

The officer was taken to hospital.

The robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.

No suspects were arrested.
