DA raises concerns over Clr Masala

The DA has raised concerns about allegations surrounding Clr Stenias Mashala (Ward 96), who was involved in a car accident which left one person dead on January 29.

The accident occurred on Du Randt Road, Putfontein.

According to the Putfontein SAPS spokesperson, Const Nelly Modiba, when the police arrived on-scene they found a Hyundai bakkie in the middle of the road and a Nissan bakkie on the side of the road.

“Police called the paramedics, who declared the driver of the Hyundai bakkie dead,” said Modiba.

Mashala sustained injuries to his head and was transported to the Life the Glynnwood Hospital.

He was discharged from hospital on February 1.

A case of culpable homicide was opened at the Putfontein Police Station.

No one has been arrested and the police are still investigating.

Assault charges

The DA’s concerns come after it was reported that Mashala was arrested for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) at the Putfontein Police Station on January 16.

The case has been postponed for further investigation.

It is alleged that Mashala, along with five members of the ANC’s Ekurhuleni branch, assaulted Rose Kgabane, who exposed their alleged corruption.

Mashala and the alleged suspects appeared at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on January 17, however the case was postponed for further investigations.

DA Shadow MMC for Community Safety, Clr Ashley Hoods, said these allegations compound their concern regarding Mashala’s fitness for office and they understand the due process of law needs to run its course.

“We feel the gravity of the charges should prompt the Speaker of Council to speed up the investigation and see Clr Mashala’s recusal from council, pending the outcome of the investigation.”
