Are you a bunny person?

Caring for a bunny is not much different from having a dog as a pet.

In fact, the two could become best pals.

Rynfield resident Melissa van der Walt, who adopted a bunny from the Bunny Park in September, has urged people to adopt one of their own when adoptions of the park’s overpopulated inhabitants get into full swing.

Luna and Gabby (a chihuhua) are best friends.

“They get along well as long as Luna does not sit in the dog’s bed,” said van der Walt.

She said she feeds her rabbit a balanced diet (50 to 60 per cent of which is grass) and the occasional carrot, saying the orange vegetables are high in sugar.

She said rabbit owners need to heed the following:

• They can be trained to use a litter box

• Rabbits are sociable and would enjoy having a bunny as a friend

• They don’t have to be bathed, but groom themselves like cats

• They are easily spooked. They may find it difficult to adapt to young children.
