Find peace after losing a loved one

GriefShare is led by caring men and women who have experienced grief and have successfully rebuilt their lives.

“They understand how you feel because they’ve been in the same place,” said Denise Heatlie, GriefShare leader.

“They will walk with you on the long path through grief toward healing and hope for the future.”

Michael Taylor (73) recently participated in a 13-week programme after losing his wife, Felicia, two years ago.

“I walked out there thinking, ‘Mike, this is for you’,” he said.

“I can’t believe what it’s done for me; I am changed person.”

The Northmead resident said the programme has given him the opportunity to make new friends with other members of the programme.

“It helps knowing that there are people who are going through the same thing,” said Taylor.

Heatlie describes GriefShare as a warm, confidential and caring environment where people see their group as an “oasis” on their journey through grief.

According to Heatlie, there are three key parts to the GriefShare experience:

• DVD seminar – encouraging, information-packed DVDs featuring leading grief recovery experts

• Support group – small group discussion about the weekly DVD content

• Workbook – journalling and personal study exercises that reinforce the weekly session topics.

GriefShare is a network of around 12 000 churches worldwide equipped and trained to offer grief support groups.

The programme is non-denominational and features biblical concepts for healing from grief.

GriefShare is currently holding evening group meetings at Northfield Methodist Church and morning group meetings at the Benoni Central Methodist Church.
