Flowers and cards concern Northmead residents

Two Northmead residents are concerned for their safety after three unknown men tried to deliver flowers to their properties in two separate incidents.

Northmead resident Suréta Macques said one man arrived at her Fourth Avenue home on January 20 with a bouquet of flowers, attached with a card congratulating her on a child she does not have.

The card read: “Congratulations on the birth of baby girl Keira. May she bring you much joy. Wishes the MBC Marketing Team.”

Macques’ 79-year-old father received the flowers and note, as he was the only one home.

“Is the Mrs’ husband home?” the unknown man asked.

“No, he’s at work,” the elderly man said.

Macques initially thought the flowers were intended for another address, but now realises it’s not a case of mistaken identity, after her neighbour experienced a similar situation.

Charles Thomas told the City Times two men in a silver light motor vehicle arrived at his Fifth Avenue home on January 27.

After the unknown people hooted in front of the gate, Thomas opened up and asked them what they wanted.

The resident said they had a scrap piece of paper, which read, “Congratulations on your latest addition – from Mark.”

“I asked them where the flowers and the card was,” said Thomas, after the men said they were from a florist.

He was told they’re in the car’s boot, and that they would show him once he had let them onto the property.

Thomas said they left shortly after, only to do a drive-by 20 minutes later.

The next day, there was a discarded bunch of flowers on his pavement, and on January 30, there was an attempted break-in.

Benoni Police Station spokesperson Const Zunickha Essakjee said no cases of this nature have been reported to police.
