Rubbish dump pups need a home

Five stray puppies that were apparently going to be beaten to death were saved - and now need a home.

Fairleads resident Neville Hayward has spent over R3 000 on deworming, inoculating and feeding the pups, that were born on a rubble dump in Meadowdale, in Edenvale.

Hayward works near the site, where they had received word late last year that a dog had a litter of 13 puppies.

When he returned to work in early January, only seven were found.

Two of the seven were then believed to have been taken by a community member, leaving five.

He said a security guard in the area told him that the owners of the puppies’ mother and father apparently wanted to beat the little dogs to death to get rid of them, but the guard intervened and took care of them over the December break.

Hayward said he started caring for the canines when he resumed work this year.

On January 25, he took the dogs to the Petit Animal Hospital for inoculation, which set him back just under R2 000.

He will dig deeper into his pockets next week when he takes the animals for a follow-up to the vet.

“My conscience told me to do that,” he said, when asked why he spent money on the stray animals.

Hayward said the pooches’ condition has improved tremendously, but now wants to find them homes.

“You can’t leave them there,” he said, adding that a security guard is watching over the pups.

“In two months’ time they will have to be sterilised.”
