Reap what you ‘sew’

"Micah’s Sewing School dedicates itself to teaching underprivileged women how to sew and improve their way of life,” said Regina Isaac, the owner of the school.

Located on Lincoln Road, the school held a graduation ceremony for 18 of its students late last year.

“I have no words to express how I feel,” said Isaac.

“It’s such a thrill for us.”

The non-profit school was opened in 2003 in order to make a difference in the community.

According to Isaac, she has the opportunity of working with hard working and dedicated women, and once the students graduate, they are fully equipped to start their own businesses.

The course offered at the school includes training in handwork, pattern making, learning how to use a domestic and industrial machine.

Once students have completed the six-month course, they are skilled in beadwork, embroidery and making garments.

According to Isaac, former Ward 29 Clr Imtiaz Loonat has contributed to the school’s success by encouraging women within the community to enroll in the school and learn skills that will make a difference in their lives.

“I have seen struggling women create items that help them put food on the table and help them take their children to school,” she said.

Isaac aims to grow the business and help more families in the community.

The courses are open to all Benoni residents who would like to learn the skill of sewing.
