Fraud suspect chased down

Police arrested a man for fraud following a high-speed chase in Benoni on January 24.

Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson, said the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster Tactical Team received information about a man suspected of fraud.

“The suspect allegedly advertised vehicles for sale on the internet,” said Subbiah.

The man allegedly met buyers in Boksburg, who then transferred money to him.

“Then they had to follow him to the Alexandra Licensing Department to do the paperwork.

“From there he disappeared.”

Subbiah said he was traced to a complex in Rynfield.

He said the man fled, with police giving chase and firing at the car’s wheels.

Police called for backup, and also received assistance from the Community Policing Forum (CPF).

Police eventually shot the suspect in the hand, leading to his arrest in Daveyton.

Subbiah said the suspect has more than seven warrants for his arrest, with the bulk being for fraud.

He has been charged with three counts of fraud, with more charges to be added.

The case will be investigated by the police’s Provincial Investigation Unit.

He was expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court today (January 27).
