Multiple benefits to harvesting rainwater

The Benoni Horticultural Society held a talk on harvesting rainwater on Saturday, January 21, at the Four Seasons Nursery.

This talk was hosted by Ryan Henry, owner of Pipe King Plumbing Services in Farrarmere.

Henry explained to the attendees the benefits of harvesting rain water.

He said rainwater harvesting is a simple and cost-effective method of increasing your water availability and lowering your reliance on centralised and municipal water cuts.

“Collecting rainwater means you can keep a constant supply of water on-hand for any emergencies,” said Henry.

“One can also use the water for gardening, laundry and washing.”

Henry added that harvested rainwater can also be used for drinking or cooking, but a first-flush diverter must be installed to flush the initial, most contaminated rainwater.

“A leaf eater also needs to be installed which directs leaves and debris away from the flow of water,” he said.

Lastly, Henry said the tasks or system for harvesting water can be installed underground or on a smooth surface.
