Councillor arrested for assault

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality council to suspend Clr Stenias Mashala following his arrest on January 16.

Mashala was arrested for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) at the Putfontein Police Station.

It is alleged that Mashala, along with five members of the ANC’s Ekurhuleni branch, assaulted Rose Kgabane, who exposed their alleged corruption.

“As the DA, we take corruption seriously and have committed to investigate every avenue to thwart corrupt deeds,” said Clr Ashley Hoods, the DA Shadow MMC for Community Safety.

“We will be writing to the executive mayor, requesting urgent steps be taken against those involved, given the seriousness of the allegation.”

According to the Putfontein SAPS station commander, Lieut Col Wellington Mathiane, the victim was assaulted during a meeting that was held in the area.

“It was reported that there was an argument between the councillor’s wife and the victim, which led to the woman being assaulted,” said Mathiane.

A case of assault GBH was opened at the Putfointein Police Station.

Hoods added that as for the apparent involvement of the EMPD in the hijacking and kidnapping of Kgabane, they, “Will pursue every channel and means necessary to expose those officers involved, as well as pose questions to the relevant oversight”.

“Mandated to serve and protect communities of Ekurhuleni, these police officers have instead chosen to be henchman for the governing political party,” he said.

“We will hold those responsible to book and ensure they face the full might of the law and demand accountability from those who are in charge of keeping our communities safe.”

Mashala and the alleged suspects appeared at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on January 17, however the case was postponed for further investigations.
