Information leads to discovery of donkey skins

Police are on the search for a possible syndicate trading in donkey skins after 300 to 400 such skins were confiscated from a plot in Crystal Park recently.

The Cullinan Stock Theft Unit raided the property on January 17, after receiving information about illegal animal skins on the plot.

W/O Rudi Sieberts, the Crystal Park SAPS spokesperson, said no arrests have been made.

The Mail & Guardian reported that five thousand skins were found on the property, a figure which came from the Highveld Horse Care Unit, though this figure was disputed by Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah.

“Only 300 to 400 skins were found,” Subbiah said.

“The case now falls within the mandate of the Cullinan Stock Theft Unit; they will investigate further and they will decide what happens to the skins.”

The Highveld Horse Care Unit could not be reached at the time of going to press.
