Benoni experiencing school intake delays

The Gauteng Department of Education is experiencing “high admission pressure” in Benoni, in areas such as Crystal Park and Actonville.

This was revealed in a press release from the Gauteng Department of Education’s head of communication, Oupa Bodibe.

Bodibe said learners whose parents applied online have been drastically reduced to 7 092, of which 3 930 are in Grade One and 3 162 are in Grade Eight.

“However, 12 821 completely new applications through walk-ins at the admission centres have been received by the department, of which 7 820 are for Grade One and 5 001 for Grade Eight,” he said.

“As at January 17, the total number of unplaced learners is 19 913, if we combine online applications and walk-ins.”

Bodibe said the demand for space is due to rapid migration.

To alleviate pressure in affected areas throughout the province, the department is implementing the following interventions:

• Introducing 603 alternative construction technology classrooms to accommodate learners in the high pressure schools.

• Schools are using libraries, halls and specialist rooms as learning spaces in the interim.

• Single-medium schools in high pressure areas are accommodating all learners.

• Neighbouring schools are sharing unplaced learners.

• Districts are facilitating cross-border transfers where applicable.

• Where schools cannot accommodate learners, the department will introduce transport to the closest schools with spaces.
