Tarifi breaks the 90 per cent barrier

With an average of 91.5 per cent and eight distinctions, matric learner Basheq Tarifi was the shining light in Benoni High School in 2016.

The Rynfield resident achieved distinctions in all his subjects, including English, Afrikaans, mathematics, physical science, engineering graphics and design (EGD), information technology (IT), life orientation and advanced programme (AP) mathematics.

The City Times erroneously published, on page 12 of the edition dated January 13, that Tarifi had achieved only seven distinctions in the matric examinations.

Benoni High School sent this information to the City Times, but had not included Tarifi’s distinction in AP mathematics, which he followed through the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).

“Since the state schooling system (NSC) does not provide AP mathematics as a subject, I took it through the IEB,” said Tarifi.

Besides being a high achiever, the teenager was the dux learner for Benoni High School in matric, achieved academic full colours for the third time and, together with two friends, achieved first place in the Johannesburg round of the World Scholar’s Cup in 2016.

“Furthermore I enjoy reading books, playing tennis and soccer, drawing and reading comic books in my spare time.”

One challenging aspect for Tarifi was the demanding nature of his subjects.

“The subjects I do, especially EGD and IT require a lot of time and practice in order to perfect, in addition to the various assignments we have throughout the year,” he said.

“AP mathematics was also challenging since I had no teacher and had to teach myself, which also required time.”

To break the 90 per cent barrier in five subjects, Tarifi focused throughout the year.

“It helps that I absolutely love the subjects I have chosen to do, and so I was dedicated and interested in learning more,” he added.

He acknowledged his teachers, parents, family and friends for their support during his school career.

“I would just like to specifically mention my father, Tha’er Tarifi for all his support, guidance and motivation during my schooling career,” he said.

Basheq plans to study biomedical and electrical engineering at the University of Witwatersrand this year.

He said his hope is to be at a top position in his field of study one day, contributing to the world with innovations and breakthroughs.

Basheq advised new matrics to focus on their studies.

“It’s the final stretch and although it is very busy, the results will be worth the effort,” he added.

“Another piece of advice is that they should not be afraid to seek help if they require it, and that practising past papers is one of the best forms of studying.”
