Education remains key to success

Acting executive mayor, Lesiba Mpya, empowered the class of 2016 on Thursday (January 5) in Daveyton, with words of wisdom for their future.

“As the former president of our country and world icon, Tata Nelson Mandela, stated: ‘education remains the key to success and a child of a miner, can become a doctor through education’,” Mpya said.

Mpya further explained that circumstances can never determine a learner’s future.

“As the City of Ekurhuleni, we firstly wish to welcome and appreciate the results and improvement in the year of 2016,” Mpya added.

“This is the evidence of thousands of young people, who want to succeed in their future endeavours.”

Mpya also said that it’s important to learn, as this contributes to a better society.

“It’s important to value and appreciate the journey towards learning, as it opens the mind and expands horizons unimagined,” he said.

“It’s through learning we exchange ideas; and evolve technologically and intellectually.

Because education is of importance to Ekurhuleni, Mpya mentioned EMM’s commitment to improving the future of learners:

• Education remains commodified and government is working to address that; and as Ekurhuleni, we have invested more in bursary schemes to assist.

• Those that didn’t make it, mustn’t despair but explore all avenues available.

“Learners must consider FETs as an option, as government is investing in manufacturing opportunities. We want engineers and so on,” Mpya said.

“There’s a greater demand for education, since the dawn of democracy and a shortage of institutions of higher learning.

“This is evident in the #FeesMustFall movement, of young brave learners adamant to de-commodify education.”

He concluded by wishing matriculants the best in their future endeavours.

“Ekurhuleni’s vision of a local university, is going to become a reality in the near future. We want to see greater access for our learners and ensure we invest in our future,” Mpya concluded.
