More police to curb festive season crime

The police service in the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster has been bolstered with 100 newly-trained officers.

Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah, the cluster’s commander, said the constables started their duties on December 17.

The recruits form part of 4 941 who successfully completed the Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP) at SAPS Basic Training Academies, across the country.

Subbiah said the officers’ primary focus is enhancing police visibility at shopping centres over the festive season.

“Visibility will give some confidence to the community, which we have already seen,” the commander said.

“There have been a lot of compliments from shoppers.”

The police’s national spokesperson, Brig Sally de Beer, said: “The addition of almost 5 000 new police officials to our current establishment will enhance police visibility and will ensure that the presence of the SAPS is felt and seen in all central business districts, holiday destinations, parks and public areas to curb criminal activities and to ensure that communities are kept safe and feel safe.”
