Are you the do-gooder who’s left couple ‘speechless’?

Before an elderly couple could react, a stranger paid their grocery bill - not to be seen or heard from again.

Thys van Lill (87) and his wife, who didn’t want to be named, where shopping at Oakfields Pick ‘n Pay on December 10.

While standing in the queue with goods worth a few hundred rand, a man behind them waited for the teller to ring up their items.

“When the cashier mentioned the amount, he (the stranger) pushed me aside and put his card in the card machine,” said van Lill, a Brentwood Park resident.

“We were so stunned, we said nothing; he just put the receipt in my hand and walked out.”

The pensioner said he was left “speechless”, saying the Samaritan didn’t buy anything from the store.

“We couldn’t even say thanks at that time, which we actually want to do,” he said.

“We’ve realised it’s an angel that God has sent, because why else did he pick us when all the cashiers were full?

“We want to wish him well and say that God will bless him.”

Van Lill’s daughter, Alta de Klerk, said it’s wonderful to hear that there are still do-gooders out there.
