Dreads set to create jobs

Looking to lend a helping hand to unemployed community members, Reynard de Beer started a business called Dreadies.

The business makes hats that have dreadlocks attached to the back.

The dreadlocks are made out of wool and come in different colours, that cater for male and female customers.

The Rynfield resident started this business venture in May, selling a total of about 500 hats to date.

As a registered business, de Beer faces the challenge of having competition, although he said he’s not worried about that.

“I see it as me helping others by teaching them; I’m creating a opportunity for them to earn some money,” he said.

He’s already taught two to men make the hats, although he hasn’t yet employed them.

“I’ve always wanted dreadlocks,” said de Beer.

“It’s not often that you see an Afrikaans guy walking around with dreads.

“Dreads are a way of showing love and the diversity, that comes with having them.

“They show unity and solidarity.”

De Beer recently held an exhibition at a local shopping mall and said people’s responses were “pretty cool”.

“People are surprised when I take off the hat,” he added.

“I see it as taking down boundaries.”

Apart from being a real estate agent, de Beer has an opportunity to earn extra money each month through Dreadies.

De Beer would like to help others through his business, by teaching them how to make these hats and ultimately, make a living out of this craft.

Should the business grow further, de Beer said he’ll look to employ the people who he’s taught the skills to.
