Multi-talented Hawa is making waves from Lakefield
Multi-talented Lakefield resident, Hawa Shahaboodien, balances being a businesswoman, mother, wife and helping others realise how beautiful they truly are.
BCT: Why did you move to Benoni?
HS: I moved to Benoni eight years ago after marrying my husband, Saqeeb Shahaboodien.
Moving to Benoni has brought me closer to a central hub, which gave me exposure and thereby grew my business – and gave me wider reach across the board.
BCT: What business do you do?
HS: I own a hair, nail, beauty and laser salon in Lakefield, called Bella Beauté; which I started over a year ago.
BCT: Why did you choose this career?
HS: I love doing hair and make-up and how it improves one’s self-confidence.
Make-up can transform anyone with just the right dosage, combined with professional technique.
I love working with people and making a difference in their lives.
BCT: What would you say is one of the biggest achievements so far, regarding your career?
HS: I did the hair and make-up for all the contestants of the Miss India SA pageant, held at Gold Reef City on December 4 – and I also did hair and make-up for the Miss India SA Gauteng pageant this year.
I studied at Novelle Beauté in Johannesburg under Anton van Niekerk and Professor Aleit Pretorious. I completed a three-year beauty course in two years between 2002 and 2005; did two years of hairdressing and between that, I did my diploma in teaching beauty therapy.
I have over 60 certificates, so I’m an internationally qualified somatologist; internationally qualified hairdresser and attained my diploma in teaching of beauty therapy.
BCT: You are 33 years old and have achieved so much. Apart from your studies, what hobbies do you have?
HS: I love painting and cycling.
BCT: Tell us about your life growing up?
HS: I am the youngest of three children; my eldest brother was the late Ebrahim Essa.
My elder brother is Ahmed and my parents are Feroza and Hassen Essa.
I went to school at Balfour Laer en Hoërskool and matriculated in 2001.
I married my husband eight years ago and we have two children: Tahseen (6) and Ebrahim (4) Shahaboodien.
BCT: What are your future plans with regards to your career and dreams?
HS: One of my three aspirations, is to see my own make-up brand out in the market one day.
Secondly, I also aspire to set up hair and make-up workshops all over the country and last, I would like to become a household name in the hair and make-up industry.
