Man found guilty of killing dog with spade

The man who killed a dog with a spade for attacking a chicken was sentenced to four months in prison or a fine of R2 000.

The man was found guilty at the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on November 30, after the Benoni SPCA opened a case of animal cruelty against him.

A dog was beaten to death with a spade for attacking chickens on September 23, in Putfontein.

The Benoni SPCA received a call at around noon.

Former inspector Zama Mabena and Jesse Casper (trainee inspector) were sent out to the business, situated on Du Randt Road.

“On arrival at the property, the man admitted that he had killed the dog, because it had killed one or more chickens,” said Vicky Finnemore, Benoni SPCA manager.

There were several eyewitnesses and one confirmed the man had hit the dog at least five times.

Finnemore said the SPCA is disappointed with the verdict.

She said the man had pleaded guilty and should have received a more severe sentence.

Putfontein station commander Lieut-Col Wellington Mathiane confirmed the conviction, but could not say whether the man is in prison or paid the fine.
