Doctor in her happy place

General practitioner and Farrarmere resident, Graciela Gonzalez, won the “Best Performing Doctor” category at the Khanyisa Service Excellence Awards recently.

Gonzalez, a full-time doctor at Mary Moodley Memorial Clinic, in Actonville, received the award at the Gallagher Convention Centre on November 18.

The Gauteng Health Department hold the Khanyisa Service Excellence Awards to honour health professionals in Gauteng, who’ve gone beyond the call of duty to assist patients.

Several Gauteng hospitals and the district health services that have excelled in complying with national core standards, were awarded.

“I was surprised and very happy when I heard that I was nominated,” Gonzalez said.

“When I heard that I won the award, I just felt very honoured and excited because it’s not only recognition for my work – but recognition of the work that we’ve been doing at this clinic for some time.”

She praised her happy place doctors at the facility.

“There are a lot of doctors deserving of this award; all my colleagues work as hard as I do and deserve recognition as well,” Gonzalez added.

“Although the clinics conditions and supplies have improved considerably in the last years, it hasn’t always been like that.”

She also thanked supervisor doctors Ozo Ojibeziaco, Joyse Musonda and the Ekurhuleni Family Physician Department, who are a cornerstone in the improvement of the quality of the doctor’s work.

The Cuban physician has been practicing for the past 26 years and moved to Benoni in 2012.

“I got my diploma as a medical doctor in 1990 and for the specialty of Family Medicine in 1994, in Havana, Cuba,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez takes pride in what she does, because it’s her love and passion to help people.

“I love what I do; I need to do it – that’s who I am and what I wanted to be,” Gonzalez added.

“To me, every human being has the same value and we all need high quality health services – and each one of my patients deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, high professionalism and with the best treatment available for their diseases – and that’s what we do at our clinic.

“There’s nothing that makes me happier, than making another human being happy.”
