Khanyisa Service Award for nurse Nicole

Sister Nicole Moonsammy was honoured at the Khanyisa Service Excellence Awards on November 18, for her contribution to helping society through the health profession.

The Gauteng Health Department host the annual Khanyisa Service Excellence Awards to honour health professionals who’ve gone beyond the call of duty to assist patients.

Moonsammy received the Cecilia Makiwane Nursing Recognition Award.

“Cecilia Makiwane was the first registered non-white professional nurse in South Africa: on January 7, 1908,” Moonsammy said.

“The government introduced the Cecilia Makiwane Award for health care professionals in her honour, in 2002.”

Moonsammy is a Farrarmere resident and has worked at the Mary Moodley Memorial Clinic in Actonville, for the past eight years.

“I was very surprised and honoured by the award I received,” Moonsammy said.

“I’m most grateful to God for the grace and wisdom he gives me, to carry on with my daily tasks.

“Thank you to Aisha Bibi Sayed, who’s the assistant director for the Benoni/Brakpan provincial clinic in the East – and thank you to the Department of Health for recognising my hard work and dedication.”

Prior to working at the clinic, Moonsammy was a nursing student at the University of Johannesburg from 2004 to 2007, where she obtained her degree in nursing.

“I then began my nursing career at the Mary Moodley Memorial Clinic in 2008.

“I would say that I’m a hard worker, who’s always motivated to serve the community and I always go the extra mile when doing my work – not only for my patients, but for the community and society at large.”

Moonsammy is currently a clinical nurse practitioner at the Mary Moodley Clinic.

“I ensure the smooth running of the psychiatric adult and child clinic at the facility, ensuring the patients are counselled, plus receive their appropriate and necessary treatment. I do home visits to those who can’t attend the clinic or those who’ve relapsed,” she said.

“Nursing for me is a passion and a vocation; not just a job.

“It was my dream from childhood to become a nurse and care for humanity; and I’ve fulfilled that dream.”
