Planned tower to take water pressure to new heights

Much of Benoni might have higher and more consistent water pressure soon, if plans to build a new water tower in Northmead go ahead.

In comment received from the metro in September, it was said a new 4.5Ml or 5Ml tower is required to augment the existing 1.6 Ml tower, which is situated between Hospital Road and Farrar Street.

“This project is at bid specification stage with construction expected to commence in the latter part of the 2016/17 financial year,” said Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson.

On November 18 Clr Jacques Meiring (Ward 27) said the new tower would be built at the same location as the current one, though at the time of publishing, it was unclear whether or not it would be a replacement.

“The plans and budget for the tower have been approved, and they will break ground early next year,” he said.

The metro’s comment also mentioned plans to build a tower in Fairleads, but no further details were given.

Additional questions were sent to the metro regarding these and other potential water department projects in Benoni, but none was forthcoming by November 28.
