Actonville SAPS spokesperson Capt Ramothakhi Maqabe said police received information about the mother, who allegedly chained her children.
“Investigations into the matter resulted in a search of the suspect’s house in Wattville, where the children were found chained to the legs of the bed,” said Maqabe.
“It’s suspected that the children were chained from around 7am in the morning, until police found them at 3pm.”
Maqabe explained the mother said she chained the children, because she had no one to look after them – and she was afraid they would be raped.
The two girls are aged one and nine years old.
Both children were taken to a place of safety – and the suspect will appear at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
Maqabe urged the broader community to look after children and always protect them from any kind of abuse.
“Should we find any member of the community exposing children to any form of abuse, police will immediately make an arrest,” said Maqabe.
