Over R1-m recovered in counterfeit goods

Eight men are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court this morning (November 28), for being in possession of counterfeit goods believed to be valued at R1-million.

According to Clifford Shongwe, EMPD spokesperson, the men were arrested in Cloverdene on November 25.

The EMPD made the arrest after the owner of a truck called a tracking company, when his driver failed to return with his truck to Germiston.

The driver was destined for Mozambique with a cargo of soap powder.

Tryna Maritz, Crystal Park SAPS communications officer, said the driver did deliver the cargo in Mozambique, but stopped in Cloverdene en route to Germiston.

The owner of the truck became suspicious when the driver did not return, which prompted him to call a tracking company.

The truck was traced to a property on Fifth Road.

Maritz said the eight men, aged between 24 and 40, were caught off-loading counterfeit goods; including handbags, shoes and clothes.

It’s unclear where these goods came from.
