Fire station to receive R28-m upgrade

An upgrade to the Farrarmere Fire Station, valued at R28-million, has been welcomed.

Work has already begun on the multi-million rand upgrade.

The construction is divided into two phases, with the first expected to be complete by November 30, 2017.

The completion date of the second phase is not yet known.

Parking bays for fire engines, a gymnasium and ablutions, sundry rooms and offices form part of phase one, which is in the range of R18-million, according to William Ntladi, of the Disaster and Emergency Management Services.

He said R10-million is being set aside for phase two, which will include a recreation area, wash-bay, sundry rooms and staff parking.

Ward 28 Clr Malanie Haggard said people are excited and look forward to development.

“I definitely welcome it,” said Nellie du Toit, the co-owner of the Engen garage on Mercury Street.

“This park was in a terrible state.

“There was rubbish and homeless people sleeping [in the park], but it will now be neat.”

Haggard said: “It will alleviate crime and loitering taking place in the open area between Sapphire and Bailey streets.”

“Furthermore, in more recent times, rodents have become a problem in the area, due to illegal dumping on the open grounds.

She said noise pollution will be limited to working hours on weekdays.
