Police sensitise learners

The Benoni SAPS visited Dalpark Learning Academy on November 17, to motivate learners and provide tips on how the youth can be vigilant this festive season.

According to Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Const Zunickha Essakjee, the talk was done to educate and prevent the youth from becoming victims of crime this festive season.

“We also encouraged them not to engage in criminal activities,” said Essakjee.

Children were also motivated to set goals and work hard towards building a better future for themselves.

Essakjee said they’ll be visiting more schools until December 7.

The Benoni SAPS shared the following tips with the learners:

• Never get into a car with someone who you don’t know

• Don’t accept gifts from strangers

• Never open your front door to people who you don’t know

• Tell an adult where you’re going and when you’ll return

• Your body is private; you have the right to say no.

For children to be less vulnerable to dangerous situations, they must:

• Not be left alone at home or elsewhere, where they can become susceptible to abuse, alcohol or drugs

• Be taught to keep doors locked and windows closed

• Know their parents’ phone numbers and emergency numbers

• Know their home address

• Not display valuables like cellphones and jewellery, in public.
