The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina, made the announcement in Germiston this morning (November 23).
He said Mahlaba will pursue business interests.
The resignation will be effective immediately.
Gen Isaac Mapiyeye will serve as acting chief until a permanent replacement has been found.
