Nearly half of Benoni left dry

Several suburbs of Benoni were left high and dry for several days, last week.

On November 17, Clr Pieter Henning (Ward 25) said the area of Mayfield had no water for five days.

“Apparently Rand Water found the area did not save enough water during the restrictions, therefore they were cut off,” Henning said.

“The water pressure was also either low or off at that time, from Chief Albert Luthuli Park through Etwatwa.”

He added that water tankers were sent to the affected areas, but there weren’t enough to cover the large area.

In comment from the metro, it was confirmed that water was off in New Modder, Chief Albert Luthuli Park, Daveyton, Rynsoord, Etwatwa and Mayfield for several days, even outside times of water rationing.

When asked about Mayfield being cut off for not saving enough water, Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, said, on November 18: “Rand Water didn’t cut off the water completely, they only reduced water pressure to a point which was not sufficient to fill up our reservoirs.

“All areas should have water from today, unless there’s rationing on a specific day to a specific area.

“Yesterday Rand Water opened their valves and it was discussed that only the metro will do the rationing.”

Henning confirmed that water pressure had returned to the affected areas by November 18.
