Fix what’s broken, don’t throw it away

Sannie (81) and Corrie Lindeque (83) celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on November 10, because they believe that when something breaks, you fix it - don’t throw it away.

The Rynpark Two residents have lived in Rynfield for all 60 years of their marriage, for 13 of which in Rynpark Two.

“We met 62 years ago, when Corrie visited his brother, Ben Lindeque, in Johannesburg, where I lived,” said Sannie.

“Ben played tennis and so did I.”

Corrie added that one day he visited the tennis courts to drop off tea and biscuits for his brother.

“That is when I saw Sannie and I knew that she was going to be my wife,” he said.

Corrie, who lived in Brakpan, took Sannie to a hall in Brakpan for their first date.

“Our first date was a dance in Brakpan, and Sannie was the most amazing woman there,” he said.

Together the couple has two children, Melinda Maré and Riaan Lindeque and three grandchildren, Quintin Edwards, Chanel Maré (15) and Juan Lindeque (13).

The Lindeques base their marriage on mutual trust, respect and making God the centre of their relationship.

The couple reminisced on two of their best memories in their marriage.

Sannie said her first child, Melinda, was a touching memory, and Corrie added that one of his favourite memories was their first date.

“Sannie is still as beautiful as the day I met her,” Corrie said.

The two also mentioned traits they love about each other.

“Corrie does not know how to say no, he wants to help everyone,” Sannie said.

And Corrie loves how his wife loves him and his family.

“She never stops taking care of me and she is a fantastic mother to our children,” he added.

Lastly, the couple gave advice to younger couples who are newly-weds or are considering getting married:

• Never go to bed angry

• Always be honest with each other

• Speak to marriage counsellors when faced with trouble that cannot be resolved internally

• Respect each other’s feelings
