Korsman litter pick-up a success

Members of the community and Korsman Conservancy did their bit for the community on Sunday morning by cleaning up the Korsman Conservancy in Lakefield.

Members of Korsman Conservancy and the community gathered at 8.30am on Sunday morning to clean up the Korsman Conservancy in Lakefield.

“This was the best turnout that we had,” said Kosrman Conservancy president, Jane Trembath.

“In total, we collected 20 bags of litter.”

Carin Jones taught her boys, Daniel (three) and Luke (seven) the importance of looking after nature by allowing them to join the litter clean up. She is seen here placing gloves on Daniel’s hands while Luke puts his own gloves on.

Hendro Swanepoel (16) is a member of the community who enjoys giving back to the community. He enjoys helping at the Korsman Conservancy litter pick ups.

Eleanore and John Brand enjoy looking at the vegetation at Korsman Conservancy, so they decided to help at the litter pick up so they can continue to appreciate the pan.

Jose Barbosa and his wife, Cassandra Barbosa who is the owner of Animal Lovers Project Swing (not in the photo) also attended the litter pick up.

Alison Bainbridge said she joined in the litter pick-up because everyone needs to do their bit for the community and nature.

Jane Trembath, chairman of the Korsman Conservancy is passionate about the conservancy and preserving it for the birds.

Trembath said Korsman Conservancy is the most important urban bird sanctuary in the East Rand and there are very few natural spaces left.

“We have found 138 species so far,” she said.

Therefore preserving the conservancy is of high importance to her, especially against alien invasive vegetation, because local species cannot feed on it.

“The conservancy is owned by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), but the community has a responsibility to look after it,” Trembath added.
