Zuma honours Oliver Tambo’s memory

Wattville residents were in high spirits as the president of South Africa addressed them at the grave site of Oliver and Adelaide Tambo, on October 27.

To honour his memory and celebrate what would have been Oliver Tambo’s 99th birthday, the president and other delegates spoke of the legacy that was left behind by the ANC’s foremost leader during their years in exile.

The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina, emphasised the importance of preserving the foundation and principles of the “original” African National Congress.

“Who are we going to respect if we can’t respect the current leadership,” said Masina.

“We need to relive his values, by learning his values.”

President Jacob Zuma gave background on Tambo’s history and memories they shared together, during the apartheid times.

“Oliver Tambo stood for a non-racist, non-sexist and prosperous country,” said Zuma.

“He built a culture of service and sacrifice.

“He was not shy to say the ANC was the beginning of the road to freedom.

“He was also not shy to say that the ANC would be the first to lead a democratic country.”

The president described Oliver Tambo as a staunch Christian, who thrived in solving problems in a peaceful manner.

He recalls Tambo as a man who valued everyone’s opinion; not looking down on anyone.

Zuma commended Tambo’s efforts in ensuring that the ANC carried the same message internationally, as is it did nationally – for decades.

Veterans and other members of the ANC sang songs of praise for the Tambos.

Zuma emphasised how the ANC is dedicated to continuing the legacy that was left behind by the past leaders, who moulded the party.
