Traffic calming measures required

A Brentwood Park resident is calling for traffic calming measures on the corner of Celia Nestadt Road and Stokroos Street.

Danie Kroch woke up to a broken wall at his main gate last month, with no idea of what had happened.

“We saw the main wall was broken, but we had no idea how it happened, until we looked at the footage,” said Kroch, whose house is situated on Celia Nestadt Road and has a camera looking onto the road.

“When we looked at the footage, we saw that a motor vehicle was approaching at around 3.45am and it appeared that the driver lost control of the car, which knocked into my wall.

“We had no idea this had happened because, when we awoke, there was no vehicle outside, only pieces of the car.”

Through several sources, Kroch was able to find the driver of the vehicle who allegedly crashed into his wall.

Later that day, another motor vehicle driver also lost control at the same spot, on the intersection of Celia Nestadt Road and Stokroos Street, but there was no damage to Kroch’s house.

According to Kroch, several Brentwood Park residents have pleaded with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) for years about placing traffic lights at the intersection of Celia Nestadt Road and Stokroos Street, but to date, nothing has happened.

The City Times published an article in the edition dated July 6, 2011.

In the article, the EMM commented, stating that no traffic lights could be placed at this intersection, because lights had already been placed on the corner of Celia Nestadt Road and Kirschner Street.

However, Kroch is now querying if calming measures can be erected to force motorists to take caution and slow down when they approach the bend.

The metro had not responded at the time of going to print.

The City Times asked readers on the Benoni City Times Facebook page where they would like robots to be erected.

These were the comments:

•Corner of Great North and Louisa roads (Brentwood Park)

•Corner of O’Reilly Merry and Malherbe streets (Rynfield)

•Putfontein Road and Third Avenue (Cloverdene)

•Corner of Oak and Hanekam streets (Northmead)

•Corner of Elm and Forest roads (Benoni Agricultural Holdings)

•Corner of Birch and Jarrah roads (Benoni Agricultural Holdings)

•Sixth Street and 14th Avenue (Northmead)

•Corner of Ensign Street and Great North Road (Airfield)

•11th Avenue and Fourth Street (Northmead)
