No injuries after tree falls onto shack

A tree fell on several shacks at the Emandleni Informal Settlement on Tuesday, November 1.

According to Clr Haseena Ismail (Ward 29), no-one was injured or killed in the incident, although she showed concern for the potential danger to residents of the settlement.

“I called disaster management and the parks department to come and assist,” Ismail said.

“We also notified the housing department and the Red Ants to come out to assist the resident [whose shack was worst affected].”

According to William Ntladi, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), fire fighters from Benoni Fire Station responded to the call.

“The call was received at around 5.38pm and there were adverse weather conditions at the time,” Ntladi said.

“On arrival, it was found a huge tree had fallen down, damaging about four shacks as a result.

“Fortunately enough, no casualties were accounted at the scene.”

Ntladi said firefighters cut away the tree using power chainsaws.

In addition, Ismail organised sheeting for the resident whose shack was worst affected.

“We couldn’t allow her to sleep without a roof for the night,” Ismail said.
