Etwatwa teen survives ‘mob justice’ attack

Etwatwa residents allegedly attempted to set alight a teenager who they believe to be involved in criminal activities.

The incident occurred yesterday (November 3), during an alleged mob justice attack.

The 16-year-old managed to survive the attack but he sustained serious injuries and was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Gauteng Provincial SAPS spokesperson Capt Mavela Masondo said 14 men were arrested and will be charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and attempted murder.

“The teenager was ambushed by the community as he was accused of being part of the notorious gang known as OVL,” said Masondo.

The men then approached the teenager, assaulted him and attempted to set him alight.

Masondo added that police responded quickly to the incident and managed to rescue the boy.

The arrested suspects have been taken into custody.

Police are still investigating whether the teenager is involved in criminal activities.
