The changing face of Henderson’s in Benoni

Behind the facade of this building, is the name “Henderson’s”.

It was a clothing and haberdashery store at number 67 Prince’s Avenue.

Henderson & Co had branches throughout the country and the Benoni branch’s doors were opened in 1914 by E O Henderson.

His father, R H Henderson, who was mayor of Kimberley during the SA War and a close friend of Cecil John Rhodes, was the pioneer and founder of these very popular clothing stores throughout South Africa.

A second floor was added to the Benoni store in 1930 and, in 1961, when E O Henderson died, his son, B Henderson, took over his father’s business.

In July 1972, the Benoni branch closed its doors after 58 years of service to the local public and, after it was renovated and modernised, the Henderson’s building was occupied by a another clothing store, which is believed to have been Edgars.

When Edgars moved to the corner of Rothsay Street and Prince’s Avenue, Foschini occupied the building.
